Welcome to Bergslagen, a present wilderness wonderland, richly forested with hundreds of lakes and streams teeming with wildlife. Kolarbyn acts as an ideal base camp for you to explore the surrounding nature and take part in local cultural events. Enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, fishing and mushroom picking.

Swim in the lake

Kolarbyn has its own beautiful little lake, Skärsjön, with a natural sand beach and round rocks shaped during the last ice age. Swedes usually swim during hot days in July and August when the water temperature rises just above 20 degrees celcius. The lake is usually covered by a thick layer of ice between December and April.

Sauna floating on the lake

Kolarbyn has a floating sauna on the lake. It is wood heated and has space for up tp 10 persons. Cut your own fire wood and heat it up! To cool down, just plunge into the lake. The sauna is free to use on Satyrdays during the Summer season, otherwise the charge is SEK 50 per person.

Pick berries and mushrooms

Welcome to Blueberry country! The forests around us is literally covered by blueberry plants so feel free to fill your buckets. Typically, the season runs from the end of July through most of August and September. Between August and October there are also varoius types of mushrooms available. Chanterelle is by far the most popular one and often referred to as the gold of the forest. So bring a big basket and a mushroom guide. Locals recommend frying the mushrooms with some salt and butter.

Take a hike

Kolarbyn offers some good self-guided trails. We provide maps to explore a number of trails in the nearby forest of Bergslagen where you are almost guaranteed not to meet any other people... actually you are more likely to meet wild animals. Bring a lunch along and set off for the wilderness!

BBQ at the bonfire

Kolarbyn has several fire places, of which one has a view over lake Skärsjön. Cut your own fire wood. Pans, cutlery and some other primitive kitchen supply is available in the little storehouse. The nearest supermarket Coop is in Skinnskatteberg just 3 kilometers away. Served food is avaibale at weekends, please book in advance.

Go fish in a lake

Kolarbyn is located by lake Skärsjön which is ideal for Pike and Perch fishing. A fishing permit valid for a number of nearby lakes is SEK 80, valid for the whole family and can be purchased in the reception. Team Sportia is a local sport and fishing outfitter in Skinnskattberg just 3 kilomenets away. The nearby area offers lots of good fishing waters, for example the Hedströmmen river, the Malingsbo-Kloten nature reserve and at least another 30 good lakes and ponds. Experienced fishing guides are available at request.
