In Kolarbyn there is no electricity or running water. Here you sleep well in front of the crackling fireplace and wake up to beautiful birdsong. Silence, wilderness and exciting forest experiences are only a couple hours away from the big city.

The hostel is a collection of charcoal huts in the middle of the spruce forest. Here are twelve huts with two bunks with inflatable mattress and sheepskin rugs to sleep on. All the huts have a fireplace and you chop your own wood and can pick blueberries directly on the roof. The huts is made for 2 people but we can also put an extra bunk for children in the house.

The area offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation and fine fishing lakes (contact us for info about fishing licenses), barbecue areas and great hiking. The hostel is a eco-friendly accommodation built from natural materials. A portion of the proceeds received by the Kolarbyn goes directly to conservation of nature and cultural values. A visit to the hostel will be an exciting and cozy outdoor experience for both adults and children.

You have access to your huts from 14.00 the day of arrival until 12.00 on departure day. Kolarbyn has no staff in the reception 24 hours around, but a host / guide will meet you at the front desk between 14.00-15.00 for your incheck. Notify arrival time, and call if you are late.

Packing List & equipment
We recommend that you bring weather resistant clothing and footwear, warm clothes for cold evenings, sleeping bag, pillow, camera, binoculars, swimsuit, towel, water bottle and snacks. Sleeping bags can be rented (sleeping bag, small pillow & sheets).

Food & grill
In Kolarbyn are several barbecue areas for cooking, one of them is located near lake Skärsjön. We offer simple self-service lunch / dinner that you cook yourself. Fry your own pancakes with jam, cook pasta with various pasta sauces and pesto.

You chop firewood yourselves. Pots, pans and primitive cooking equipment can be borrowed from the kitchen storage. The nearest supermarket is in Skinnskatteberg if you would like to buy something, about 4 km. Dinner / lunch and breakfast are included in some guided tours and adventures.

An organic breakfast for self-service is offered every day. The breakfast is available in our kitchen storage and the idea is that the guest start a fire at one of the fireplaces and cook their own porridge, eggs, coffee / tea and toasting bread over the fire. Some more examples of what is offered is fresh bread, various juices, milk (that can be stored outside), jams, marmalades, various flakes, cream cheese and caviar. (Not offered during the winter season November 1 to April 30).

Guided tour in Kolarbyn during the incheck time to inform you how everything works and where to find everything, inflatable mattress & sheepskin rugs to sleep on, candles, matches, firestarters, firewood, primitive cooking equipment, dishwashing facilities in the stream, access to seats in the community building (if not booked). Bring sleeping bag and pillow yourself. If you have booked the Log cabin blanket, pillow and bedding is included.

Toilet and shower
In Kolarbyn there is outdoor toilets with toilet paper, soap and water. We have no showers but take a dip in the lake Skärsjön, many gets also book the floating sauna to clean themselves.

Electricity and fresh water
There is no electricity at all in Kolarbyn, instead we use candles (100% stearin) for light. Each hut also has a wood-burning stove for heating. Drinking water is available from our spring.

Garbage & rubbish 

Waste disposal in Kolarbyn and we want you to put all the garbage in these containers, and not in nature because it is the finest we have.

Dogs are welcome in Kolarbyn and in the huts. The dogs are not allowed to dig ugly holes in the ground or disturb the wildlife in the area. Pets can not join guided tours, then we recommend Hånkatorps, a guesthouse for dogs in Skinnskatteberg.

If an accident occurs
In Kolarbyn is a first aid kit in the storage room and hosts / guides are trained in first aid and CPR. The nearest health center is Skinnskatteberg (3 km), bigger hospital in Västerås (60 km). In case of fire, injury or other immediate danger, call 112. Also contact the host ​​in Kolarbyn.

Car parking
Kolarbyn have free parking on the gravel road just 50 meters from the huts.

Rowboat & Canoes
In Kolarbyn a rowboat and six canoes for rental. The price also includes life jackets and a map of Skärsjön with information what to see during the tour on the lake. You rent the boat or canoe for a half day.

In Kolarbyn is a wood-fired floating sauna to rent.  Space for maximum 10 people. If you want to rent the sauna private, you should book in advance to be sure to get the time you want.

The second stay at Kolarbyn and we are pleased also this time. Everyone should experience at least one night in Kolarbyn! I write it reluctantly, because I would like to have it all to myself! The breakfast was worth every penny!
